    Jodi Arias says she prefers death penalty in post-conviction interview

    Jodi Arias says she would rather receive the death penalty than a long prison sentence after she was convicted of first-degree murder Wednesday, calling death "the ultimate freedom."
    In an exclusive interview with MyFoxPhoenix.com, Arias says she was shocked by the verdict.
    "I think I just went blank," Arias said. "I just feel overwhelmed. I think I just need to take it a day at a time. It was unexpected for me. There was no premeditation on my part."
    Arias spent 18 days on the stand sharing intimate, emotional and oftentimes X-rated details of her life before a rapt television and online audience. She had hoped it all might convince a jury that she killed her one-time boyfriend, Travis Alexander, in self-defense.
    However, the eight men and four women on the panel didn't buy it, convicting Arias of first-degree murder after only about 15 hours of deliberations. Jurors will return to court Thursday to begin the next phase of the trial that could set the stage for Arias receiving a death sentence.
    Arias says she would "prefer to die sooner than later," rather than spending the rest of her days behind bars.
    "Longevity runs in my family, and I don't want to spend the rest of my natural life in one place," Arias told MyFoxPhoenix.com. "I believe death is the ultimate freedom and I'd rather have my freedom as soon as I can get it."

    After months of twists and turns in a dramatic trial rife with sex, lies and digital images, an Arizona jury Wednesday found Jodi Arias guilty of first-degree murder in the slaying of ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander.
    Jurors will return to court Thursday for the aggravation phase of the trial -- an important step in the next key decision they face: determining whether Arias lives or dies.
    "Now the odds, I think, shift somewhat in her favor, because it's a very different thing to sentence someone to die than to convict them," CNN senior legal analyst Jeffery Toobin said.
    In a television interview minutes after the verdict was announced, Arias said she'd prefer a death sentence.
    "I said years ago that I'd rather get death than life, and that still is true today," she told Phoenix television station KSAZ. "I believe death is the ultimate freedom, so I'd rather just have my freedom as soon as I can get it."
    The comments prompted authorities to place Arias on suicide watch in an Arizona jail, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
    "Until she is released from suicide protocol by Sheriff's officials no further media interviews of inmate Arias will be permitted," the office said in a statement.

    After a 19-week trial, a guilty verdict means Jodi Arias could face the death penalty. A jury begins considering that possibility Thursday.

    Jodi Arias, convicted of first-degree murder of her on-and-off lover, says she was surprised by the jury's verdict Wednesday and hopes for the death penalty over life in prison.

    The jury that found her guilty of killing Travis Alexander now faces a decision on whether she deserves execution or a life term in prison.

    Arias, who choked back tears as the jury's decision was read, told KSAZ-TV in a courthouse interview after the verdict was announced that she was surprised the jury found her guilty of premeditation in the death of Alexander.

    "It was unexpected for me, yes, because there was no premeditation on my part,'' she said.

    She said she would "prefer to die sooner than later'' and that "death is the ultimate freedom.''

    The Maricopa County sheriff's office said in a statement that Arias was being put on a suicide watch because of her interview comments.

    The 12 jurors deliberated reached a verdict after deliberating less than three full days. The televised trial, which began Jan. 2, gained notoriety for its accounts of gore and sex.
    Alexander's brothers and sisters issued a statement saying they "are in agreement with the jury's verdict of guilty."

    A California woman has been found guilty of premeditated murder in the shooting and stabbing death of her boyfriend in his Arizona home in 2008.


    A jury found Jodi Arias, 32, planned the killing of Travis Alexander, 30, a motivational speaker and salesman.

    Initially blaming the killing on intruders, Arias later said she had killed him in self-defence.

    Arias wept quietly as the verdict was read. She faces either life in prison or the death penalty.

    The jury deliberated for 15 hours over three days after hearing closing arguments on Friday.

    Testifying for 18 days in her own defence, Arias said she was too scared and ashamed to tell the truth at the time of the killing but insisted she was not lying to jurors. She has spent four years in prison.

    Shifting story
    The case, with its attractive victim and defendant and salacious testimony of sex and violence, has gained an outsized media interest in the US since the trial began in January.

    Alexander's body was found in the shower of his suburban Phoenix, Arizona home in June 2008. He had been shot in the forehead and stabbed multiple times, his throat slashed.

    Arias initially denied any involvement, telling authorities masked intruders had killed Alexander.

    But she later said Alexander attacked her following a series of sexual encounters that day, slamming her onto a tile floor. She

    The jury got the case last Friday and deliberated all day Monday and Tuesday before returning its verdict. The trial began in early January.

    Tears welled in Arias' eyes as the jury read their verdict.

    The media was notified at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time that a verdict had been reached.

    Arias claimed she killed Alexander, a motivational speaker and salesman for a legal services company, in self-defense. But prosecutors insisted it was an act of first-degree murder that could bring the death penalty. The jury also had the option to convict Arias of second-degree murder or manslaughter.
