Pat Cummins Reveals Players Who Gave Him Sleepless Nights & Answers Questions About His Team-mates

Pat Cummins decided not to participate in the second half of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Australian pacer was staying in the Maldives along with his other Aussie teammates after the first half of the IPL was suspended in May, and could leave for Australia only after 14 days.

And later, when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the second leg of the IPL will be played in the UAE, Cummins announced that he will not participate in the tournament, and did not disclose any particular reason as well.

Meanwhile, the bowler revealed the batsmen who are the toughest to bowl against. In a question and answer session on his YouTube channel, the pacer listed the battles he enjoyed against several batsmen from around the world. The elite list by Cummins featured names like Joe Root, Virat Kohli, Babar Azam, AB de Villiers, and Kane Williamson.

“These are the best in the world and are the obvious ones as they don’t have any weaknesses. Each team has a couple of batters that are toughest to bowl to, but you want to face those challenges as it is most rewarding,” Cummins said.

“You talk about Joe Root and Ben Stokes from England. Then obviously, Pujara and Virat [Kohli] from India. You have got Kane Williamson and Babar Azam. In South Africa, there was AB de Villiers and Faf [du Plessis] is there. Every team has a couple of guys who are the prized wickets,” he added.

    The Board of Control for Cricket in India, in a virtual Special General Meeting, held on Saturday, May 29th, decided to resume the curtailed 14th edition of the Indian Premier League in the United Arab Emirates.

    The league’s current edition was abruptly postponed owing to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases inside the bio-bubble of different teams across different cities. With 29 games being conducted, the edition still has 31 unfinished games, not completing which could cause severe financial losses to the apex board of cricket in India.

    As the BCCI plans for the smoothest possible resumption of the league, there are challenges aplenty with a busy international calendar and ICC’s Future Tour Programme (FTP) commitments looming over multiple teams. For instance, Australia has a tour to the Caribbean set in line from late June onwards, and later a one-off Test against Afghanistan, followed by the Ashes.

    Australia, in the middle of this, is also planning to tour Bangladesh for a five-match T20I series, while England has two away series against Pakistan and Bangladesh respectively, after they play India at home. BCCI will also have to keep an eye on the Caribbean Premier League schedule (from August 28 to September 19) which poses the threat of many West Indies stars missing out from the IPL.

    Another severe challenge for the board remains to ensure that the players are not burnt out, given all the teams have to participate in the T20 World Cup. India is set to tour UK for six Tests, which includes a five-Test series against England, preceded by the World Test Championship final against New Zealand. India also has plans in place to play South Africa in a white-ball home series, whereas New Zealand was set to tour India for two-Test series later this year.

The Australian all-rounder was dropped from the lineup in the previous game with Tim Southee taking his pace and the latter went on to pick three wickets to keep his place in the side.

    Cummins pulled off a stunning inning against the Mumbai Indians earlier with a 14-ball 50 and equaled the record of the fastest half-century of all time in IPL as well. However, apart from the match-winning knock with the bat, Cummins has failed to live up to his reputation with the ball and has been quite expensive at the back end of the innings. To add to his woes, he wasn’t getting enough wickets in the powerplay as well and it piled up a lot of pressure on him.

    However, legendary batter Yuvraj wasn’t convinced by Cummins’s omission and noted that he was surprised to see the Australian on the bench unless he is injured. He felt that Cummins being a world-class all-rounder will win more games more often than not even if he misfires in a few of the matches.

    Earlier Delhi Capitals won the toss and chose to bowl first at the Wankhede Stadium. KKR made three changes to their lineup with Baba Indrajith and Harshit Rana making their IPL debuts while Aaron Finch came into the lineup in place of Sam Billings.     Hence, the Shreyas Iyer-led side would largely miss his services. Meanwhile, this major report was carried out by cricket.com.au. It also must be noted that KKR have endured a hard time in the competition and are currently reeling at the seventh place with five victories in 12 outings. They only have an outside chance to qualify for the playoffs and Cummins’ exit has diminished that as well.

    KKR now need to win their remaining two games with significant margins alongside depending upon other match results. With Cummins not being in the scheme of things anymore, KKR will depend upon the likes of Shivam Mavi, Umesh Yadav and Tim Southee to handle the pace-bowling department.

    Meanwhile, Australia’s full-fledged tour of Sri Lanka will get underway on June 7 with the first of the three T20Is. It will be followed by five ODIs and a couple of Test matches.
