Michael Vaughan Compares Cheteshwar Pujara With A Former Pakistan Cricketer & More Cricket News
Pujara’s form was one of the concerns for the management but with gritty 91 and 61 in the third and fourth Tests respectively, the right-handed batter, for the time being, has managed to silence his critics.
But his knock also had few interruptions as the medical team had to intervene when Pujara twisted his ankle. There was a delay in play for few minutes as his ankle was being heavily taped. But luckily for India, the batter was up and running and seemed in no pain whatsoever.
Cricketer-turned-expert Michael Vaughan, who closely watched the whole episode unfold, feels Pujara has many traits similar to former Pakistan batter Inzamam-ul-Haq. “From knowing Pujara a bit from his time at Yorkshire, he’s a bit like me and I wouldn’t say that fielding is high up on his list of priorities. It’ll be an injury in that ankle that if there’s any prospect of him taking a bit of time off the field, he will take it. There’s a few around who used to be like that, Inzamam is one who comes to mind,” Vaughan said on the BBC Test Match Special.
Back in 2019, Rohit Sharma’s Test career was in the doldrums after he failed to score runs in the middle-order following his debut in 2013. But after he was sent to open the batting against South Africa, his career in the longer format took a turn. Two years later, the 34-year-old Rohit has been able to translate his ODI and T20I form into Test cricket as well.
On Saturday, the Nagpur-born notched his maiden overseas Test ton after he scored 127 in India’s second innings of their fourth Test against England at the Kennington Oval in London. Speaking on opening the batting in Test cricket, Rohit said that it was a big risk he took two years ago. The veteran mentioned that he was at a ‘make-or-break’ stage in his Test career.

Cricket fans can’t keep calm as Virat Kohli is set to add another feather to his already-illustrious hat. The first Test match between India and Sri Lanka in Mohali will mark Kohli’s 100th appearance in the format and many eyes will be on him. On the eve of the clash, former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar lavished massive praises on Kohli while speaking about his about the latter’s ability to shine under pressure.
Gavaskar, who’s among the 11 Indians to have played 100 Tests before Kohli, asserted playing these games in the longest format is itself an achievement. He also went to draw comparisons between the 33-year-old and former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad. Gavaskar highlighted the two belong to a rare breed of batters who like to sledge bowlers and provoke them.
Hanuma Vihari is one of the unsung cricketing heroes of India who has got the job done for the team whenever it was demanded from him but more importantly has also put the teamabove himself. Lately, the Indian team’s former fielding coach R Sridhar has come forward and said that the Test specialist had sacrificed his place for the team’s cause during a home series in 2019.
Vihari has been included in the Indian squad for the ongoing two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The 28-year-old might have made his red-ball debut during the away series against England in September 2018 but, in the 13 Tests that he has played so far, he had only featured in one home series and that was against South Africa in October 2019. However, he is currently batting at three in the ongoing Mohali Test.
India’s ace middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav has found a reward for his sensational batting of late by getting included in the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) central contracts for the first time.

Apart from Scott Styris, Former England captains Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook too have backed New Zealand to win the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against India. The reason given by the duo was the ability of the Kiwis to be disciplined over a long period of time during the five days of the Test.
Vaughan and Cook’s support to New Zealand is a no-brainer as the team had recently beaten England 1-0. During that fascinating series, the Blackcaps didn’t give any freebies whatsoever for England batters to work on. All their pace bowlers Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Matt Henry, and Kyle Jamieson, were right at it with hitting those lines and lengths consistently.
Vaughan also added that not only with the ball, New Zealand have been equally good with the bat with various players stepping up and doing their job well. The likes of Ross Taylor, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, and the latest entrant Devon Conway have performed well even when their captain Kane Williamson is not performing.
“I fancy New Zealand. I know I’m going to get absolute pelters on social media for going against India. But the way New Zealand played in the two Tests against England, I think they’re going to do it. They are a high-class cricket team – I like every aspect of their game,” Vaughan told ‘BBC’.

On the other hand, Cook feels their recent strong performances against England in very similar conditions will keep Williamson and company in a sharp frame of mind, ahead of the marquee clash. The southpaw further elaborated on their squad selection, saying they might be tempted to play Ajaz Patel rather than going with four pace bowlers.
“New Zealand are going to win. They’re two matches further into match-sharpness after the series win against England – they’re used to playing under pressure and in English conditions.”

Cheteshwar Pujara Gives Update On Kohli's Fitness And More News
Team India Test skipper Virat Kohli missed the second Test against South Africa after he sustained a back spasm prior to the game at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. It was a massive development since the now 33-year-old Kohli was India’s leading run-scorer during the tour of South Africa back in 2018.
KL Rahul, in the meantime, stood in for Virat in the second game of the ongoing red-ball series. Right-handed batter Hanuma Vihari replaced the Delhi-born Kohli in the playing eleven for the crucial encounter. Indian middle-order batter, Cheteshwar Pujara, in the meantime, shared an update on Kohli’s fitness.
“Officially, I can’t say much but yes, he is definitely getting better and I feel that he will be fit soon. The physio can answer this better and I am sure an update will come from the BCCI very soon,” Pujara was quoted as saying to the reporters on Wednesday, January 5.
Prior to the game that started on January 3, the Board of Control for Cricket inn India released a statement, updating on Kohli’s availability for the second Test. Going by their statement, Kohli was under the observation of BCCI’s medical staff.
“Team India captain Mr Virat Kohli had a spasm on his upper back this morning. He won’t feature in the second Test against South Africa at The Wanderers. The BCCI medical team will be monitoring him during the course of this Test match.
“KL Rahul will captain the side in his absence. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain for the 2nd Test,” the BCCI had said in its statement.
Rahul, during the toss, also talked about Kohli’s absence from the game, but also said that he’s likely to recover for the final game of the three-match series.
“Unfortunately, Virat has had an upper back spasm, the physios are working on him and hopefully he’ll recover for the next Test,” Rahul had said.

Vaughan has decided to ‘step back from commentary duties following a backlash for his involvement in racism at Yorkshire Cricket Club.
The former England cricketer was one of seven cricketers at Yorkshire who were charged by the ECB’s Cricket Discipline Commission for tarnishing the game’s reputation with their alleged racist comments. British Asian cricketer Azeem Rafiq sent shockwaves around the cricketing world after he revealed the disgraceful racist comments he faced during his stint with Yorkshire.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has always had the knack of staying in news columns. Time and again, the former cricketer has proven that he has little to do what the public and media think, as he expresses himself without any qualms on his social media platforms.
His comments often attract plenty of responses and flak from both cricket experts and the social media crowd, but being at his nonchalant best, Vaughan pays no heed before making his next remark. In a recent interview, he went onto say that the only reason Kane Williamson is not the greatest player in the world is that he is not an Indian.
“If Kane Williamson was Indian, he would be the greatest player in the world. But he’s not because you’re not allowed to say that Virat Kohli is not the greatest, because you’d get an absolute pelting on social media.”
“So, you all say Virat is the best purely to get a few more clicks and likes, few more numbers following here. Kane Williamson, across formats, is equally the best. I think the way he plays, the calm demeanour, his humbleness, the fact that he is silent about what he does. It’s just that he doesn’t have the 100 million followers on Instagram and doesn’t earn the $30-40 million or whatever Virat gets every year for his commercial endorsements,” Vaughan said.

While none had problems with his appreciation and backing for Williamson, his remarks on Virat Kohli did not go down well with many. Taking note of his comments, Pakistan batter Salman Butt put forth his opinion on his YouTube channel, where he stated: “Kohli belongs to a county that has a huge population. On top of that, his performance is better too. Virat has 70 international tons at the moment, no other batsman from this era has that many.

Virat Kohli’s rough patch in the IPL 2022 continued when he was dismissed for a golden duck against southern rivals Sunrisers Hyderabad last weekend. It was the third time this season that Kohli was dismissed for a first-ball duck and the second against SRH. He was sent back by Marco Jansen during the reverse fixture.
Commenting on the batting megastar’s horrendous form, former England skipper Michael Vaughan has come forward and said that all Virat needs to do is revisit his past and think about why he even started playing the game in the first place in order to get himself out of this phase. Giving further clarification on the same, the 2005 Ashes-winning skipper said that the 33-year-old must forget the stardom that he has achieved in the last decade in order to be in a better frame of mind.
“I hope Faf du Plessis has spoken to him and told him – ‘Go back 10 years when you didn’t have this profile. You’re not married and don’t have a kid. You’re going out there to whack the ball and have some fun. Forget your age, forget what you have done. If he gets to 35, I reckon he can go big. It’s just those initial 0-10 that he’s been struggling with. If he can get away and show a little bit of that youthfulness, he’s going to be dangerous,” Vaughan told Cricbuzz.
Virat Kohli has only managed a solitary half-century in the ongoing season and apart from that has registered two 40+ scores. The batting icon has so far amassed 216 runs in 12 matches averaging 19.64. He would now be hoping to put his best foot forward when the Royal Challengers Bangalore face Punjab Kings in their next match at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on May 13. With 14 points already in the bag, all RCB now need to do is win their remaining two fixtures in order to earn a playoff berth for the third consecutive season.
