Italy earthquake: at least 120 dead after homes reduced to rubble

It struck a central Italian town in the early hours while residents slept: a 6.2 magnitude quake has left at least 120 people dead and many more missing under the rubble of their homes.
Volunteers and soldiers have rushed to the scene, using their bare hands to search through the ruins for survivors.

    A strong earthquake struck Myanmar on Wednesday night and was felt in parts of eastern India and Bangladesh, causing residents to rush out of their homes in panic. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries or major damage.

    The magnitude-6.9 quake struck at a depth of 135 kilometers (84 miles), 396 kilometers (246 miles) north of Myanmar's capital, Naypyidaw, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

    Residents in Myanmar's main city of Yangon panicked after the quake struck, but authorities there said there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

    Turkey's interior minister said on Monday that the death toll in a 7.2-magnitude earthquake has reached 270. Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin told the Associated Press television that more 1,000 others were injured in the temblor that struck eastern Turkey a day earlier. On Monday, rescuers pulled out several people alive from collapsed buildings in Ercis, including a man who managed to call for help on his cell phone. Dozens of people were trapped in hills of debris, but authorities offered hope that the death toll may not rise as high as initially feared. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who inspected the area late Sunday, said "close to all" mud-brick homes in surrounding villages had collapsed in the temblor that also rattle parts of Iran and Armenia. Rescuers searched throughout the night among pancaked buildings as families members waited outside, some in tears. Cranes and other heavy equipment lifted slabs of concrete and residents searched for the missing with shovels. Aid groups scrambled to set up tents, field hospitals and kitchens to assist thousands left homeless or who were afraid to re-enter their homes.

    A 101-year-old man was pulled alive from the rubble of his house in Nepal seven days after it collapsed in a deadly earthquake, police said Sunday.
    Funchu Tamang was rescued on Saturday with only minor injuries and airlifted to a district hospital, local police officer Arun Kumar Singh told AFP.
    "He was brought to the district hospital in a helicopter. His condition is stable," said Singh in Nuwakot district around 80 kilometres (50 miles) northwest of Kathmandu.
    "He has injuries on his left ankle and hand. His family is with him."
    Police also rescued three women from under rubble on Sunday in Sindupalchowk, one of the districts worst hit by the quake, although it was not immediately known how long they had been trapped.
    One had been buried by a landslide while the other two were under the rubble of a collapsed house.
    "They are being taken to hospital for treatment," said Suraj Khadka, an officer with the Armed Police Force in Kathmandu.
    Nepal's government had on Saturday ruled out finding more survivors buried in the ruins of Kathmandu.
    Multiple teams of rescuers from more than 20 countries have been using sniffer dogs and heat-seeking equipment to find survivors in the rubble of the capital.
    But outside the city search and rescue work has largely been carried out by local police and troops.
