കമ്പനി നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച കളനാശിനിയിലെ ഗ്ലൈഫോസേറ്റ് കാരണം ക്യാന്‍സര്‍ ബാധിച്ചുവെന്ന കേസിലാണ് കോടതി വിധി.

അഗ്രോ കെമിക്കല്‍ ഭീമന്മാരായ മൊണ്‍സാന്റോയ്ക്ക് 1996 കോടി രൂപ പിഴ. കമ്പനി നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച കളനാശിനിയിലെ ഗ്ലൈഫോസേറ്റ് കാരണം ക്യാന്‍സര്‍ ബാധിച്ചുവെന്ന കേസിലാണ് കോടതി വിധി.

ഗ്ലൈഫോസേറ്റ് എന്ന രാസവസ്തു ക്യാന്‍സറിനു കാരണമാകുമെന്ന് ആരോപിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുള്ള ഡെവൈന്‍ ജോണ്‍സണ്‍ നല്‍കിയ ആദ്യ കേസിലാണ് വിധി. യു.എസിലെമ്പാടുമായി 5000ത്തോളം കേസുകള്‍ മൊണ്‍സാന്റോയ്‌ക്കെതിരെയുണ്ടെന്നാണ് കണക്ക്.
2014ലാണ് ജോണ്‍സണ് നോണ്‍-ഹോഡ്ഗ്കിന്‍സ് ലിംഫോമ സ്ഥിരീകരിച്ചത്. കാലിഫോര്‍ണിയയിലെ സ്‌കൂള്‍ തോട്ടപരിപാലകനായ ഇദ്ദേഹം പതിവായി റേജര്‍പ്രോയെന്ന കളനാശിനി ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ടെന്നെന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അഭിഭാഷകന്‍ വാദിച്ചത്.

ഡിസൈനിലെ പിഴവിനും, ഉല്പന്നത്തിന്റെ ദോഷഫലം സംബന്ധിച്ച് മുന്നറിയിപ്പു നല്‍കുന്നതിലുണ്ടായ വീഴ്ചയ്ക്കും കമ്പനി ഉത്തരവാദിയാണെന്ന് കണ്ടാണ് കോടതി നടപടി.

പിഴ തുകയില്‍ 39 മില്യണ്‍ ഡോളര്‍ ജോണ്‍സണിന് നഷ്ടപരിഹാരമായി നല്‍കാനും 250 മില്യണ്‍ ഡോളര്‍ കമ്പനിയ്ക്ക് ശിക്ഷയായും ഇടാക്കാനാണ് കോടതി നിര്‍ദേശിച്ചത്.
കുറ്റം നിഷേധിച്ച മൊണ്‍സാന്റോ വിധിയ്‌ക്കെതിരെ അപ്പീല്‍ നല്‍കുമെന്ന് അറിയിച്ചു.
