27 Killed Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting Newtown Connecticut 18 Children 9 Adults Dead

A lone gunman killed 26 people at an elementary school here, including 18 children, in a terrifying early Friday morning shooting spree.

The Associated Press and local media reported the shooter, an unidentified adult male, was also dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Two handguns were recovered at the scene. Mayor Mark Boughton said several victims had been taken to local hospitals.

Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were being escorted away from the school by their teachers. Some witnesses reported of up to 100 shots.

The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School is the latest in a series mass shootings in the U.S. this year, including Tuesday's assault by a lone gunman at a Portland, OR., shopping mall that left two dead and one wounded.

Sandy Hook is in a residential, wooded neighborhood about 90 minutes north of New York City. It has has 39 teachers and about 650 students. A reverse 911 call went out to parents warning of an incident. Parents were being reunited with children. But, NBC Connecticut reported, police were searching the area behind the school with guns drawn.

Terese Lestik was relieved to find her five year old daughter, Eva, unharmed.

"I heard a boom-boom,'' Eva said of the gunshots she heard earlier.

    NEWTOWN, Conn. -- A lone gunman killed 26 people at an elementary school here, including at least 18 children, in a terrifying early Friday morning shooting spree.

    The Associated Press and local media reported the shooter, a 24-year-old male identified by CNN as Ryan Lanza, was also dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary School. A second person was in custody and undergoing questioning. At least three weapons were recovered at the scene, including a .223-caliber assault rifle and two semi-automatic handguns.

    Mayor Mark Boughton said several victims had been taken to local hospitals.

    Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were escorted from the school by teachers. Some witnesses reported of up to 100 shots. There were unconfirmed reports that the assailant, dressed in military style assault gear, shot most of the victims in a kindergarten classroom.

    President Barack Obama teared up Friday as he addressed the nation after a mass shooting in Newtown, Conn. left 27 people dead, including 18 children.

    A shooting rampage in this small Connecticut town on Friday morning left 28 people dead, including 20 children killed inside their elementary school, authorities said.

    The dead included the suspected gunman, whom law enforcement sources identified as Adam Lanza, 20. Police said that Lanza first apparently killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, at the home they shared in Newtown. Then he drove in her car to Sandy Hook Elementary, the school at which Nancy Lanza taught kindergarten.
    In the car, authorities said, were three guns: a .223 caliber “Bushmaster” rifle and two pistols, a Sig Sauer and a Glock.

    At the school, authorities said, Adam Lanza shot and killed six adults — including the school’s principal — and 20 children. They were shot in two different rooms of the school, police said.

    Police were called to the school after 9:35 a.m., and officers searched the classrooms for a shooter. When they found the gunman, however, he was dead by his own hand. No officer fired a shot.

    One other person was injured in the shooting, but survived.

    Friday’s shooting became the second-deadliest in U.S. history, after the rampage that killed 32 students at the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va. It happened in a country that had grown darkly accusto

  • Connection Between Nancy Lanza, Mother of Newtown Shooter, and Sandy Hook Elementary Still in Question

    There are now conflicting reports as to whether Nancy Lanza — the mother of Newtown shooter Adam Lanza and the woman believed to be his first victim — taught at Sandy Hook Elementary, where Lanza killed 26 others, or if her relationship with the school was much more nebulous. It had been reported for much of Friday that Nancy taught at the school — and that Adam may have targeted children in her classroom — but that hypothesis got much murkier late Friday night.

    Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo noticed late in the night that the Wall Street Journal's updated report on the shooting contained a note at the bottom that put Nancy Lanza's relationship with Sandy Hook in question:

    A former school board official in Newtown called into question earlier reports that Nancy Lanza had been connected to Sandy Hook Elementary School, possibly as part of the teaching staff.

    "No one has heard of her," said Lillian Bittman, who served on the local school board until 2011. "Teachers don't know her."

    Marshall also points out that the AP's account of the shooting includes information from a source that Lanza (presumably Adam) attended the school at some point but otherwise "appeared to have no recent connection to the place." The story, though, also quotes an anonymous parent saying that Nancy Lanza was a substitute teacher at Sandy Hook:

    Nancy Lanza, the mother of Adam Lanza, was killed in her home before the Connecticut school shooting took place, according to ABC News. Adam Lanza reportedly shot Nancy Lanza in the face before driving his mother's car to Sandy Hook Elementary School, according to the Associated Press.
    Adam Lanza then reportedly killed 20 children and six adults at the Newtown, Connecticut school before pulling a gun on himself. Two 9mm handguns were found at the scene of the Connecticut shooting, per NBC News. Adam Lanza also reportedly brought two semi-automatic pistols and an automatic rifle to school. CNN reports that three of those guns were legally owned by Nancy Lanza.

    This finding makes sense considering Adam Lanza was not old enough to legally own a gun in his home state. NBC News reports that Connecticut residents must be 21 or older to purchase or carry a handgun. Adam Lanza, meanwhile, was just 20 years old. However, rifle owners in the state are not required to register their weapons.

    Meanwhile, the father of the alleged shooter in this Connecticut shooting has been identified as Peter Lanza. Peter was married to Nancy Lanza until the couple divorced in 2008, according to the Stamford Advocate.

    The shooter was identified by the Associated Press as Adam Lanza, 20, who was found dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary School of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. At least three weapons were recovered at the scene, including a .223-caliber assault rifle from the back of a car and two semiautomatic handguns found near Lanza. His 24-year-old brother, Ryan, of Hoboken, N.J., was being questioned by authorities.

    A law enforcement official -- briefed on the situation but asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak publicly -- said that Nancy Lanza, the shooter's 52-year-old mother and Sandy Hook kindergarten teacher, was among those killed.

    Authorities say an adult victim was found at Nancy Lanza's home, but would not confirm the identity. Details about what transpired at the school and the Newton home remained sketchy several hours after the shootings, which began at about 9:30 a.m., shortly after classes began. State Police Lt. Paul Vance said authorities were still examining the gruesome crime scene and determining victims' identities and piecing together the sequence of events.

    Family friends in Newtown also described the young man as troubled and described his mother Nancy as very rigid. "[Adam] was not connected with the other kids," said one friend.

    Late today, police said Nancy Lanza's body was found in the family home. According to sources, Lanza shot his mother in the face, then left the house armed with at least two semi-automatic handguns and a semi-automatic rifle.

    State and federal authorities believe his mother may have once worked at the elementary school where Adam went on his deadly rampage, although she was not a teacher, according to relatives, perhaps a volunteer.

    As part of the investigation authorities searched the New Jersey apartment of Adam's older brother Ryan in Hoboken, New Jersey.

    Police had initially identified Ryan as the killer, until he sent out a series of Facebook posts saying it wasn't him and that he was at work all day.

    Sources told ABC News that Ryan, 24, works as a senior person in Ernst and Young's tax practice in Manhattan.
