Gone are those days when India had shortage of quality fast bowlers. The current lot has many pacers who can trouble the best in the business. One of them is Harshal Patel, who received his maiden Team India cap in November last year. Having made his professional debut in 2009, the right-arm pacer has been around the scenes since a while.

However, it was the 2021 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) which saw Harshal’s emergence as a wicket-taking machine. Playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, the fast bowler made the ball talk throughout the season and bagged the purple cap. In fact, his tally of 32 wickets is joint-highest for any bowler in any IPL season. Chennai Super Kings’ Dwayne Bravo took as many wickets in 2013.

While Harshal’s stellar efforts couldn’t take RCB to the elusive title, it earned him a maiden Team India call-up. The pacer was selected for India’s three-match T20I series against New Zealand at home. After warming the benches in the opening clash, Patel got to play the next two games and he didn’t disappoint. The 31-year-old returned with four wickets as India whitewashed the Kiwis 3-0.

While Patel has many weapons in his arsenal, his deceptive slower deliveries have particularly impressed the cricket fraternity. Nailing pin-point yorkers is also well within his reach. All these factors make Patel a force to reckon with in white-ball cricket. He has also troubled batters in red-ball cricket as well. Hence, the pacer’s future in international cricket is looking pretty bright at the moment.

He, in fact, clocked 152.95 kmph in a game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the fastest delivery by an Indian in the tournament’s history. His blitzes made SRH retain him for INR 4 crore ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction. Notably, this gem was unearthed by none other than former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who served Jammu and Kashmir cricket team as a player-cum mentor for a brief period.

    Rajasthan Royals (RR) continued their merry run in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season on Tuesday against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). They defended 144 runs pretty comfortably at the MCA Stadium in Pune to win the encounter by 29 runs. Riyan Parag and the Royals bowlers were the chief architects of the victory as they climbed to the top of the points table with their sixth victory of the season in eight outings.

    Apart from RR’s stunning victory, another incident that remained the talking point of the match was the tempers flaring between Harshal Patel and Riyan Parag. The two players exchanged some serious words at the end of RR’s innings when Parag finished off with a six off the former’s bowling. The two were seen having a go at each other before the members from both sides separated them. Many felt it happened in the heat of the moment and even Riyan Parag seemed to have forgotten the incident.

    Irrespective of what happens during the match, the players of the two teams tend to shake hands at the end of the match. However, the scenes after the game between RCB and RR were not great as Harshal Patel didn’t shake hands with Riyan Parag. The latter was delighted after playing a crucial role in the team’s win and came forward to shake hands with his counterpart. But Harshal refused to do so and just walked past him. Even Parag was shocked to see him walk past like that and social media was quick to spot Harshal’s actions.

    Meanwhile, it was a memorable game for Riyan Parag as he finally responded to all the criticism by scoring his second IPL fifty. He came out to bat with his side in all sorts of trouble but stayed unbeaten till the end to propel the Royals to 144 runs in their 20 overs. He was a star on the field as well taking some good catches at long on. He took catches of Virat Kohli, Shahbaz Ahmed, Suyash Prabhudessai and Harshal Patel to deservedly win the Player of the Match award.

He also played in 43 List A matches and 28 T20s, scoring 1234 and 708 runs, in the two formats respectively.
