Dinesh Karthik reacts on getting a call from Indian team in T20Is and more cricket news
Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who has been in superlative form in the IPL 2022 season for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, has made it to the Indian squad for the T20I series against South Africa at home. The 36-year-old last played for India in the 2019 World Cup semi-final and his finishing abilities this season have impressed one and all. The right-hander has accumulated 287 runs with an average of 57.40 and played some match-winning innings.
Since making his international debut in 2004, Karthik has been in and out of the Indian team and has played in the shadows of legendary MS Dhoni. From being a top-order batter, Karthik has been adapting to different roles for the side and he was picked up specifically for the finisher’s role in the IPL 2022 mega auction by the RCB franchise. He managed to do justice with the decision and showed his class the side in pressure situations.
Meanwhile, Karthik mentioned about the importance of self-belief to accomplish any feat and showed gratitude towards his supporters. He added that he will continue his hard work in the years to come. Karthik has been picked up as one and the three wicketkeeping options in the squad alongside Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan. He is definitely on the radar to make it to the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. “If you believe yourself, everything will fall into place! MS Dhoni retired from International cricket in 2020, and the Indian team is yet to find an able replacement finisher for him. But the recent form of the 37-year-old Dinesh Karthik suggests that he might be ready to fill those massive boots. Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri also batted for Karthik to be the finisher for the Indian team heading into the T20 World Cup.
The wicketkeeper batter made his debut for India in 2004 and was the hero of India’s first T20I win in 2006. Karthik’s time was limited with the national side due to the presence of one of the greatest finishers of the game in MS Dhoni. But the veteran batter has come into his own in recent times. His role for RCB in the recently concluded IPL was similar to that of Dhoni’s, as he donned the role of finisher for his side. Karthik has been rewarded a call-up to the national team after scoring 330 runs in 16 matches with an amazing strike rate of 183.33.
Ravi Shastri weighed his opinion on the matter and said that Karthik has to make the opportunity count in the upcoming T20I series against South Africa to remain in contention for the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year. “This is his opportunity. If and when he gets an opportunity in these games, he has to do it with India colors on. We know he has got the experience, so this becomes extremely vital,” Shastri told Star Sports.

Although India has already got a mercurial wicketkeeper batter in Rishabh Pant, Shastri believes that the southpaw is more suited to batting up the order. He picked Karthik to do the job as a finisher, something Dhoni did for a long time.
“You have to see from the team’s point of view, what are they looking for? Do they want a keeper who will bat at the top of the order or do they want a keeper who will be the finisher? Former India batter Gautam Gambhir said that there was no point in giving Dinesh Karthik a place in the India squad that will travel to Australia for the upcoming T20 World Cup if he is not picked in the playing XI. Following the former opener’s comments, Indian great Sunil Gavaskar said that Karthik is the “player India wants”.
Gavaskar wondered how one could see that he is not going to play, adding that players have to be picked based on their form and not reputation. He explained that as Karthik bats at No. 6 or 7, he cannot be expected to score a fifty regularly.
“I know people are talking about how can you include him in the team when he’s not going to play. How do you see he’s not going to be able to play? He could be the guy you want. You look at the form and not reputations, names and then you pick the guy,” said Gavaskar on Star Sports.

As this was Rahul’s second offence of the season, he has been fined a sum of INR 24 lakh. At the same time, the other members of the LSG playing XI have been fined INR 6 lakh or 25 per cent of the match fee, whichever is lower.
It must be noted that Rahul will be handed a one-match ban if he commits another slow over-rate offence this season. In that case, he’ll also be fined INR 30 lakh. Besides Rahul, MI skipper Rohit Sharma is the only other captain to have committed this offence twice. Hence, the duo has a serious need to keep an eye on the clock in their upcoming assignments.
