In UP's Shamli, Dalits still suffer. Their enemies? Poverty and the Apathy of the government

For once in today's India, the reason for the Dalits' plight is not gau rakshaks, or any overt discrimination. It's just extreme poverty and complete lack of awareness about the schemes of the government.

Most Dalit women complain about how their entire families still have to work at brick kilns for a meagre Rs 200 a day to make ends meet. Others work at farms, after the 'pattas' of agricultural land leased to them by the government expired.

With all the members of the family forced to work as daily wagers, children are often not enrolled in schools, which, besides free education, also provide free meals under the mid-day meal scheme.
