दो करोड़ 19 लाख की आबादी वाला हमारा पड़ोसी देश श्रीलंका बर्बादी की कगार पर पहुँच गया है। राजपक्षे परिवार की नालायकी की वजह से ही श्रीलंका की यह हालत हुई है। पिछले चार महीनों से देश की जनता राष्ट्रपति गोटाबाया राजपक्षे की सरकार के खिलाफ विरोध प्रदर्शन कर रही है। 8 जुलाई को गोटाबाया ने प्रदर्शन उग्र होता देख अपना राष्ट्रपति निवास छोड़ दिया था। गोटाबाया के जाते ही प्रदर्शनकारियों ने राष्ट्रपति भवन पर कब्ज़ा कर लिया। प्रदर्शनकारियों को पूल में तैरते, राष्ट्रपति के ड्रेसिंग रूम में चीजों की जांच करते, उनके कार्यालय कक्ष में उनकी कुर्सी पर बैठे और उनके बेडरूम में बिस्तर पर लेटे हुए देखा गया। गोटबाया की तरफ से तीन दिन पहले ही ये ऐलान कर दिया गया था कि वे 13 जुलाई को पद से इस्तीफा दे देंगे लेकिन 12 जुलाई की रात ही गोटाबाया देश छोड़कर फरार हो गए । डेली मिरर के अनुसार, गोटाबाया ने अपने इस्तीफे पर हस्ताक्षर कर दिए हैं लेकिन हस्ताक्षर करने से पहले गोटाबाया ने शर्त रखी थी कि उन्हें उनके परिवार के साथ सुरक्षित देश के बाहर जाने दिया जाए। सोशल मीडिया में गोटाबाया के मालदीव पहुँचाने के वीडियो भी सामने आये हैं।
