After a successful outing in the series opener at Kensington Oval in Barbados, West Indies will take on visitors New Zealand in the second ODI of the three-match series on August 19, Friday. The hosts, having a 1-0 lead in hand, are just one win away from clinching the ODI series and breaking their long series-losing streak.
It was a much-needed victory for the Caribbean side as they have not had ideal outings in the recent past. They lost against Ireland in January, then lost against India in February away from home, before winning against the Netherlands in June. The last three series losses were all a clean sweep as the Windies lost nine ODI games in a row and thus the recent win, that too against a strong Kiwi side, will boost their confidence. The bowlers played a crucial role in the first game as they dismissed the Blackcaps for just 190.
The Men in Maroon then completed a successful chase, thanks to a brilliant half-century by Shamarh Brooks. New Zealand would be disappointed by their effort and would look to bounce back in the second ODI to level the series, whereas the hosts would look to extend their winning momentum and clinch the series.

Both bowlers and batters have found help on the Kensington Oval pitch. After a not-so-successful T20I series, West Indies are all set to host New Zealand for a three-match ODI series, the first of which will be played on August 17. The visitors clinched the T20I series by 2-1 as the hosts saved themselves from a whitewash scare, but they will now look to bounce back stronger in the 50-over games to try and deny the visitors the ODI series win.
Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson has a good track record in the ODI format. Gudakesh Motie was replaced in the lineup by Hayden Walsh, however, Walsh only bowled three overs at an economy rate of 8.00 and went wicketless. Thus, the Windies might plan to reverse that move.
All-rounder Axar Patel‘s thrilling cameo of an unbeaten 64 off 35 deliveries brought India’s bench strength to the limelight once again in the recently concluded game. If Ravindra Jadeja hadn’t missed out on the game due to his injury, Patel might not have gotten the chance of making it to the XI. Patel played a match-winning knock and confirmed his place in the lineup.
Another such player, who impressed everyone was Sanju Samson, who portrayed the wicketkeeper-batter’s role in the absence of regular Rishabh Pant. For the second ODI, there was only one replacement made as pacer Avesh Khan replaced Prasidh Krishna in the lineup. However, Avesh struggled to create an impact with the ball and having won the series already, India might well be persuaded to give a debut cap to Arshdeep Singh.
