India, seven-time SAFF Championship winners, have their task cut out for the remaining two round robin fixtures. After being held to a 1-1 draw by Bangladesh and 0-0 by Sri Lanka, Igor Stimac's men cannot afford yet another draw. They need to win both their remaining matches to squeeze into the final.

The first of those two must-win games comes in the form of Nepal on Sunday in Male, Maldives. India and Nepal had played two friendlies in Kathmandu in September where India won the second fixture (2-1) while drawing the first.

"Nothing much has changed,” Stimac maintained in the official pre-match press conference. “We are here, and we are still alive in the Championship. We are still here to win the tournament,” he added.

“We know them very well and have played twice against them. It’s an open game and if we play well, and do it right on the pitch, I am sure that we can win the game. There is no other option for us than to go out there and win it,” Stimac stated.

The pressure has mounted on Stimac after two poor performances where India lacked cohesion and a plan going forward. Against Bangladesh, India were 1-0 up and had a man advantage but allowed pressure to build before succumbing. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, remained largely unbothered by just a single shot on target.

Nepal come into the fixture on the back of two wins and lead the points table. They beat Maldives, Sri Lanka and look good to make the final.

    Needing an outright win to remain alive in the SAFF Championship, the Indian football team will take on host Maldives in its final round-robin league match on Wednesday.

    A draw or a loss will see seven-time champion India miss the final, which could further raise questions on head coach Igor Stimac's future with the team.

    India's worst performance SAFF Championship so far was the third-place finish in 2003 and the team has either won or finished runner-up in 11 previous editions. All the four top sides in the five-team tournament remain in contention for the October 16 final.

    With five points from two draws and one win, India is currently placed third below Maldives (six points from three matches) and Nepal (six points from three matches). Nepal plays Bangladesh (fourth place with four points) in an earlier match on Wednesday.

    Two-time and defending champion Maldives has never been easy opponents for India in the history of this regional tournament though the island country sits 51 ranking points below India in FIFA chart at 158th.

    The side led by veteran Ali Ashfaq, one of the best strikers in the region, has regrouped after losing its opening match against Nepal by beating Bangladesh 2-0 and Sri Lanka 1-0.

    Just like India captain Sunil Chhetri, the 36-year-old Ashfaq has carried Maldives football on his shoulders for a long time and has scored two of his side's three goals in this tournament. He will, no doubt, be the man India will have to be wary about.

    India felt the absence of experienced Sandesh Jhingan in deep defence as it could not defend a 1-0 lead against 10-man Bangladesh, which scored a late equaliser despite numerical inferiority.

    The SAFF Under-15 Championship is a continuity of the earlier SAFF Under-16 Championship. The motive behind the change is to allow teams to be better prepared for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-16 qualifiers to be held later this year.

    Lalrindika Edmund and Lalawmpuia joined Roshan Singh in the final third of the pitch while Aditya Patra remained the last line of defence in goal for what would later turn out to be goal-fest.

    India started the match brightly courtesy of some wonderful wing play on both flanks but it was striker Roshan Singh who managed to consistently get the better of his markers in the Bangladesh defence.
    The striker forced a save from the goalkeeper as early as the 11th minute before going down inside the box only for the referee to wave play on.

    The early efforts paid off in the 18th minute as a terrific pass from defence found Lalawmpuia's run. The forward neatly tucked the ball past the goalkeeper to give India the lead.
