A 9-year-old girl in Mexico has given birth to a baby girl, Agence France-Presse reported Wednesday.

Authorities are now hunting for the 17-year-old father in what they believe is a case of rape or sexual abuse, Mexican newspaper Milenio reported.

"We are looking for the young man to get his story because she does not understand what has happened. This is a rape or child sex abuse case," Jorge Villasenor with the state prosecutors' office was quoted by Terra Noticias as saying.

The girl, who has been identified as Dafne, was just over 8 when she got pregnant, the mother of the girl told local officials in the western state of Jalisco, AFP reported.

The girl is one of 11 children living in a poverty stricken area 25 miles south of Guadalajara,

    Mexico: 9-year-old gives birth to baby girl and purported teenage father is being sought

    Mexican authorities say a 9-year-old girl has given birth in western Mexico and they are looking for the purported father, a 17-year-old.

    Jalisco state police spokesman Lino Gonzalez says the baby girl was born last week at a hospital in the city of Guadalajara. He says the girl and her baby are doing well.
    Gonzalez said Wednesday that the girl’s family alerted authorities after she gave birth and the alleged father has not been seen since in the neighborhood the both live in. He says that if the teenager’s paternity is proven he could face child sex abuse charges.

    Gonzalez says the girl told authorities the teenager was her boyfriend.

    The young mother, who's name is reportedly Dafne, gave birth on January 27 in a Jalisco hospital near Guadalajara, reported ABC News.

    Dafne and her child are both healthy and recovering at home, said Dr. Enrique Rabago, director of Zoquipan Hospital, at a press conference Wednesday. Doctors decided to perform a C-Section, Rabago said, "due to her young age and the fact that her body was not ready to give birth."

    According to the Jalisco State Prosecutor's office, Dafne described her relationship with the child's father as loving but was unwilling to release any further information.

    "Due to her young age, we don't know if she's being entirely truthful," said Lino Ginzalez Corona, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office. "She did not realize that she was pregnant until the seventh month."

    Corona also said, according to Dafne's account, the child's father suggested she and the baby move in with him, but he left town when she refused.

    The office is "still open to the possibility of rape or child abuse," Corona said.

    Dafne is one of 11 children from a family living in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, 25 miles south of Guadalajara.

    According to Good Morning America, the 10-year-old girl, a member of the Wayuu tribe in Manaure, Colombia, delivered a healthy, 5-pound baby girl. The age of the father unknown and police in Colombia can't press charges as the tribe is under its own jurisdiction.

    The risks of such a terrifying ordeal are mental, Wall said.

    "Any 10-year-old who is pregnant has already been abused significantly by somebody," he said. "That probably should go without saying."

    There are plenty of physical risks too.
