ORAN Ecosystem for Atmanirbhar Bharat

#RadioAccessNetwork or RAN is a key part of a mobile network system that uses cellular radio connections to link individual devices to other parts of a network. Open Radio Access Network or #ORAN is based on interoperability and standardization of RAN elements, including a unified interconnection standard for white-box hardware and open-source software elements from different vendors.

By integrating a modular base station software stack on off-the-shelf hardware, ORAN architecture allows baseband and radio unit components from different suppliers to operate seamlessly. The ORAN standards are being established to transform the siloed nature of the RAN market, where a few RAN vendors offer proprietary equipment and software, thereby reducing flexibility and interoperability.

The Department of Telecommunications invited expressions of interest for the 5G Vertical Engagement and Partnership Programme. The initiative aims to foster strong collaborative partnerships across 5G use-case ecosystem stakeholders and address vertical industry needs.

The centre also created an inter-ministerial committee comprising representatives from several ministries, including electronics and information technology, agriculture, health, and education. 5G will radically change how we live, work and play.

It’s critical to make network infrastructure commercially available as quickly as possible. With Open RAN, telecom players would have the flexibility to use in-house solutions or solutions from multiple vendors for RAN services.

Open RAN has now been deployed in 35 countries around the world on a pilot or commercial basis, including in Australia, India, Japan and the United States. Operators and vendors are devoting significant resources to developing, standardizing, and validating open interfaces to ensure timely deployments.
