    India is currently the world’s second-largest telecommunications market. As on March 31, 2023, there were 1.172 billion telephone subscribers in the country.

    Over-the-top (OTT) communication services including Whatsapp, Signal, Zoom, Google Meet and Telegram could be "over regulated" with the threat of encryption being compromised, said technology policy experts after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India proposed to regulate such services in its consultation paper released recently.

  • Regulate OTT communication apps

    The telecom companies are requesting the government to level the internet calling and messaging apps playing field in the industry on the basis of "same service, same rules. They are urging the government to charge the same license fee and follow the same regulatory interception and quality of service requirements for the service.

    According to the report, TRAI suggested that internet service providers could offer internet telephony for placing calls on phone networks in exchange for payment of interconnection fees, which have since been eliminated for telecom operators. They could also offer the service if they installed equipment for lawful interception and paid the interconnection fees.

    As per the DoT, a whopping 60%-70% of voice calls are currently taking place over the online messaging apps. The voice calls made using WhatsApp and other apps are hard to track, resulting in an increase in national security and financial fraud. Therefore, there is a strong need to regulate OTT communication apps.

    With this, the telecom sector is going through a financial loss. In order to provide the calling and SMS service, these companies pay licensing fees too. As a workaround, these companies are asking the government to mandate the license fee for apps that offer online calling and messaging benefits.

    When it comes to national security, phone voice calls can be easily tracked, but over-the-top voice calls cannot be tracked. India’s telecom operators are mandated to store Call Details Record of all voice calls for at least a year. National security agencies use them whenever it is required.

    Therefore, the government now wants to bring OTT messaging and voice platforms under the licensing regime that will require them to maintain local data storage for a certain period. Additionally, all OTT platforms would need to implement the know-your-customer procedure to ensure user verification.

  • Worldwide PC shipments fall

    Most of the other major PC makers experienced business decline, with most in double digit territory. Whereas, Gartner says that, the worldwide PC shipments were down 19.6%, again with comparable losses for competitors, but with another big discrepancy in the Apple number with Gartner finding it falling 15.6% year over year.

    As per Canalys, adverse macroeconomic and industry factors including high inflation, rising interest rates and bloated channel inventories have dented the PC market’s momentum, and are likely to persist into 2023. Notebook shipments suffered the most, posting a year-on-year decline of 19% with 54.7 million units shipped. Desktop shipments proved more robust due to less reliance on consumer spending, falling 11% year-on-year for a total of 14.7 million units.

    Lenovo maintained pole position in the global PC market but suffered a 16% year-on-year drop to 16.9 million units. For the second quarter in a row, HP underwent the largest decline out of the top five vendors as it posted 12.7 million units, a 28% year-on-year fall.

    Both Lenovo and HP shipped their lowest totals since the onset of the pandemic in Q1 2020. Third-placed Dell also posted a significant decline of 21% in shipments, posting just under 12 million units.

    Apple enjoyed a better quarter than its competitors as it fulfilled orders from Q2 delayed due to supply disruptions in China and launched new M2 Macbooks. It sealed fourth place with 8.0 million units, a modest year-on-year increase of 2%. Asus rounded out the top five with 5.5 million units, an annual decrease of 8%.

    PC sales posted their fastest growth in 20 years during the first quarter of 2021 as consumers and businesses bought new laptops and desktops for remote work and learning. In 2021, PC sales grew about 15%, returning to 2012 levels after nearly a decade of slow or no growth.

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is the global non-profit organization responsible for coordinating the Internet’s core systems of unique identifiers, most notably the Domain Name System (DNS). By having the privilege of the Root server, cyber-attacks, hackers intrusion can be controlled.

    #Rootservers are an essential part of the infrastructure of the Internet. Web browsers and many other internet tools would not work without them. There are 13 different IP addresses that serve the DNS root zone, and hundreds of redundant root servers exist around the globe to handle requests to the root zone. Each root server is a network of hundreds of servers in countries worldwide. Out of the 13 Root servers, the US owns 10 Root servers and whereas, The Netherlands, Sweden and Japan have each one of the root servers.

    Today each of the 13 IP addresses have several servers, which use Anycast routing to distribute requests based on load and proximity. Right now there are over 600 different DNS root servers distributed across every populated continent on earth. However, there are nearly 1,000 mirror servers in the world and establishing mirror servers will help speed up internet access

    The internet in China is totally different from the global internet. The Great Firewall censors the content that is transferred between inside and outside China. Last year, Russia also introduced its Digital Economy National Program, a plan that would require Russian internet providers to remain functional in the event the country was cut off from the worldwide internet.

    This technology has already caused disruption in industries such as law enforcement, healthcare, electronics, banking, retail, and airline/travel. Facial recognition technology has enhanced our way of life and comes with biases in accuracy. Several studies show that facial recognition is less accurate in identifying people of color and women.

    Envisioned as #DigiYatra in 2018, the system involves the installation of biometric face recognition systems at various airports across India. These systems would scan the face of passengers eliminating the need for a printed boarding pass and furnishing of identity documents to security personnel.

    Anyone using this for the first time will have to register themselves at the airport, following which their profile and biometric details will be added to the airport's database. For every journey thereafter, the passenger will have to scan their boarding pass for verifying their DigiYatra identity.

    From here, all entry points, except manual frisking at security checks before boarding, will be through face recognition that would scan a face and open the gate automatically without manual checking of either the boarding pass or an identity card.

    Organisations such as the Internet Freedom Foundation and many other activists have slammed the project stating that the system could be misused in a country where there is no data protection or privacy laws.

    The DYF, which consists of various private operators, can collect vast amounts of personal and business data from passengers using its platform. This data can be shared with "entities within DYF and agents in relation to their programs including marketing and sales.

  • Indian IT Companies contribution

    A recent study by Nasscom shows that the Indian IT companies made a massive contribution to the US economy last year through employment, investment, strategic partnerships, and business deals.

    The Indian IT companies, alongside its customers, have generated $396 billion in US sales, supporting a total of 1.6 million jobs and contributing over $198 billion to the US economy. It also spent about $1.1 billion to grow STEM learning in the US and developed partnerships with nearly 180 institutions in the US.

    Nearly 40-78% of the revenues of Indian IT companies come from the US. Of which, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra have more than 50% exposure. Indian IT accounts for about 55% of the global IT services industry market share.

    A report released by HDFC Securities in June 2022 reveals that India-headquartered IT services firms like TCS, Tech Mahindra and HCL have doubled their revenue market share from 13.9% in 2011 to 28% in 2021. Interestingly, market share of firms with foreign headquarters like Accenture, Capgemini and Cognizant have dropped from 86% to 72% in the same time.

    In 2022, the Indian IT industry crossed the $200 billion mark in revenues to touch $227 billion, an impressive record according to Nasscom. Indian companies also invested $1.1. billion while partnering with more than 180 colleges and universities building a more robust pipeline for STEM courses.

    The report states that the demand for STEM jobs in the US is expected to grow 1.5 times faster as compared to non-STEM occupations over the next decade. More than 70% of this demand would be supported by the IT

    As the US recession gains momentum, analysts from Goldman Sachs predict that IT spending would be negatively impacted in the US as well as Europe. This is consequently expected to also impact IT companies.

    #Ransomware is now one of the most potentially damaging — and prevalent — types of malware. With this lucrative crime, hackers break into a firm’s computer system, encrypting the data, which they will only release for a fee. A Sophos report revealed that the majority (83%) of IT teams in India said the number of phishing emails targeting their employees increased during 2020. Even government agencies are not spared. In February 2021, a number of senior Indian government officials, including those from the ministries of defence and external affairs, were targeted in a phishing campaign. According to the government officials, the attackers were using compromised government domain email accounts to launch their hacking attempts. Back in July 2020, a major Indian snacks manufacturer, Haldiram, faced a ransomware attack on its servers by hackers who allegedly encrypted all its files, data, applications and systems and demanded a ransom of 7 hundred thousand USD for giving access to the stolen data. Cybercriminals have now resorted to stealing information during an attack and threaten to publish this information on leak sites on the dark web or sell it, increasing the pressure for victims to pay the ransom.

    In February 2021, India’s national airline, Air India, reported a cyberattack on their SITA passenger service systems containing personal identity information, passport data, ticket information, frequent flyer data and credit card information of about 4.5 million customers around the world. Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that ransomware damage costs will exceed $265 billion by 2031, with attacks on businesses, consumers, or devices occurring every two seconds. Ransomware Evil or REvil is one of the latest Ransomeware-as-a-service (RaaS) operators. This criminal group provides adaptable encryptors and decryptors, infrastructure and services for negotiation communications, and a leak site for publishing stolen data when victims don’t pay the ransom demand. As per the observation of cases, REvil and its affiliates pulled in an average payment of $2.25 million during the first six months of 2021. Last month, it extracted $11 million payment from the U.S. subsidiary of the world’s largest meat packing company based in Brazil, demanded $5 million from a Brazilian medical diagnostics firm and launched a large-scale attack on dozens, perhaps hundreds, of companies that use IT management software from Kaseya VSA.

    Unit 42, a response-ready global team comprising threat researchers and cybersecurity consultants, has been monitoring threat actors involved in ransomware attacks and has worked over a dozen REvil cases so far this year. Ransomware is going to dominate the cybercrime landscape. A report prepared by Unit 42 and The Crypsis Group incident response and digital forensics firm, notified several disturbing threat trends. In 2020, the average ransom payment by organisations increased nearly threefold ($1,15,123 in 2019 to $3,12,493 in 2020); the highest ransom payment doubled ($5 million in 2019 to $10 million in 2020), and the highest ransomware demand also doubled ($15 million in 2019 to $30 million in 2020). Industry data indicated healthcare was the most targeted and vulnerable sector in 2020 and the sector continues to be under further attacks by RaaS models.
