An SMS can defraud your bank account
Increasing #digitaltransactions in the country has opened the way for fraudsters to do frauds through phishing, smishing and more. One is a payment link scam, which is not new but keeps appearing here and there. Second, auto-installing mobile malware through links and SMS forwarding apps is also part of the modus operandi the fraudsters are using.
Generally, the smartphone users are the soft target of #cyberattacks. But the more we know about such malicious practices and using simple tips, the more we can protect ourselves online. The rule number one is all the smartphone users have to be smart enough and know how to use the smartphone, they must know the do’s and don’ts of using a smartphone, else they should shift to a feature phone.
Through the smishing scam techniques, someone can get the user’s personal or financial information via #SMS or instant messaging (on social networks) by pretending to be an entity such as a bank or a credit card company. The phishing attempt starts when victims arrive at the malicious websites through some means, usually through social engineering.
Attackers could send the link to the sites in an SMS that is made to look like it is coming from a bank or other service provider. They typically create a sense of urgency so that users don’t take time to think before clicking on the link. Such domains identified by the researchers pose as fake complaint portals.
After installation, the malicious application is then used to send all incoming messages on the victims’ phones to the servers controlled by the scammer. The attackers haven’t used logos or names of Indian banks in order to avoid attracting suspicion and detection. The malicious app is not hosted on the Google Play Store or any third-party application stores.
An analysis of the application’s source code revealed that the malicious application is based on an open software Github project called “SMS-Forward.” Scammers can leverage the combBy VARINDIA | 19 views

Apart from this, blockchain-based technology gave birth to non-fungible tokens - being non-interchangeable - distinguishing itself from cryptocurrency. In May, the Chinese central government issued notice to all Bitcoin trading and mining crackdown. By June, power supplies for industrial-scale Bitcoin mining farms in Xinjiang's Zhundong economic zone and Sichuan were directed to shut down. Chinese authorities believe cryptocurrency disturbs the economic order and facilitates illegal asset transfers and money laundering. The authorities also blame crypto miners for energy waste, deadly coal mining accidents - which is a potential threat to the country's efforts to reduce carbon emission. In September, China's central bank said all cryptocurrency-related transactions are illegal and must be banned. In October, the United States officially became the largest hub for Bitcoin mining operations and businesses. China's crackdown created an opportunity for overseas bitcoin mining operations - leading to an infrastructure boom in North America, Russia, Central Asia, and Europe.

OT security remains a challenge for the leaders
Organizations represented by the OT leaders who participated in a survey have been largely unsuccessful at preventing cyber criminals from intruding their systems. Nine out of 10 organizations experienced at least one intrusion in the past year, which is almost identical to the results of last year’s survey. Even though the pandemic was an unusual situation, a 90% rate of intrusion represents a significant problem that should concern OT leaders. There was a significant change in insider breach instances, which have increased to 42%. Unlike unintentional security accidents, such as an employee who clicks a bad link, bad actors have malicious intent, which means OT leaders should carefully consider who has access to their systems. Additionally, with many employees working from home, it is likely that the security issues related to home networks contributed to problems.
The fact is OT leaders were not prepared for changes related to the pandemic and had to quickly increase budgets and change processes. The two most important things are SOCs and NOCs which needs more staff and equipment because the pandemic accelerated digital transformation and increased the need for connectivity for secure remote access. The pandemic accelerated the need for third-party secure remote access because technical staff could not be on-site doing work in person. The survey showed significant growth in phishing attacks with 58% reporting this type of intrusion, up from 43% last year. The increase in phishing stems from attackers exploiting weaknesses related to the rapid changes to working that occurred at the beginning of 2020. No one was immune, and along with everyone else, OT organizations were affected. Increased digital connectivity of OT and IT networks rolls on.

Remote working varies considerably around the world depending on IT adoption, culture and mix of industries. In 2022, 31% of all workers worldwide will be remote (a mix of hybrid and fully remote). By the end of 2021, 51% of all knowledge workers worldwide are expected to be working remotely, up from 27% of knowledge workers in 2019, according to Gartner. The research firm also estimates that remote workers will represent 32% of all employees worldwide by the end of 2021. This is up from 17% of employees in 2019. A hybrid workforce is the future of the work, with both remote and on-site part of the same solution to optimize employers' workforce needs.
India and China will produce some of the largest numbers of remote workers, but their overall penetration rates will remain relatively low with 30% of workers in India being remote and 28% of workers in China working remote, according to Gartner. Digital products and services will play a big role in these digital transformation efforts. This longer strategic plan requires continued investment in strategic remote-first technology continuity implementations along with new technologies such as hyper automation, AI and collaboration technologies to open up more flexibility of location choice in job roles, Gartner said. A hybrid workforce will continue to increase the demand for PCs and tablets. In 2021, PC and tablet shipments will exceed 500 million units for the first time in history, highlighting the demand across both business and consumer markets.
