गोवर्धन का इतिहास भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की लीलाओं से जुड़ा हुआ है। द्वापरयुग में यह शूरसेन जनपद के हिस्सा था। यदु वंश के वृष्णि शाखा यहां शासन करती थी। भगवान श्री कृष्ण का सम्बंध वृष्णि यदु वंश से था। यदुवंश के प्रश्चात मित्र वंश,दत्तवंश,नागवंश,अर्जुनायन,शक,कुषाण,और जाट वंश(गुप्तवंश,यदु और तोमर जाटो का) का शासन रहा है। मथुरा मेमायर्स, पृ० 376 “जाट शासनकाल में मथुरा पांच भागों में बंटा हुआ था – अडींग, सोंसा, सौंख, फरह और गोवर्धन।ब्रज का वैभव में पंडित गोकुलचंद चौबे लिखते हैं ब्रज का खोया वैभव राजा हठी सिंह ने मोहम्मदपुर को पुनः गोवर्धन करके लौटा दिया उन्होंन ना केवल ब्रज की रक्षा की बल्कि मन्दिरो के संरक्षण में योगदान दिया सच्चे अर्थों ने वो ब्रज केसरी थे।[1]

The history of Govardhan is associated with the pastimes of Lord Krishna. In Dwaparyuga it was part of the Shursen district. The Vrishni branch of the Yadu dynasty ruled here. Lord Krishna was related to Vrishni Yadu dynasty. The Yaduvansh were ruled by the Mitra dynasty, the Dattavas, the Nagas, the Arjunayans, the Shakas, the Kushans, and the Jat dynasty (of the Gupta dynasties, the Yadu and the Tomar Jato). Mathura Memyers, p. 376 "During the Jat reign, Mathura was divided into five parts - Ading, Sonsa, Saunkh, Farah and Govardhan. In the grandeur of Braj, Pandit Gokulchand Chaubey writes that the lost glory of Braj was returned by King Hathi Singh to Govardhan. He not only protected Braj but also contributed to the preservation of temples. He truly was Braj Kesari. [1]
