FSSAI should ensure that consumers know what they are eating
Rapid urbanization is greatly influencing people’s food consumption patterns with inclinations increasing towards packaged and processed food items. India’s consumption is still pretty low when compared to western countries especially the US, wherein such foods make up for almost 70% of the country’s diet; however, consumer preferences seem to indicate a growing preference to western packaged foods over Indian foods. There is also a move to label foods in India based on their fat, salt, and sugar content. Most traditional and indigenous Indian foods usually contain salt, sugar, jaggery, ghee, oil, and spices that are essential for not only their taste but also have elements uniquely required for the Indian climate. For past few years, in India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been pushing for the proposal of interpretative food labels under front of package labelling regulations i.e., marking food items as ‘good-food’, ‘not-good food’, ‘one-star food’, ‘red-marked food’, etc., based on their salt, sugar, and fat content. There are also discussions around recommending higher taxation on foods that have sugar, fat, salt and front-of-the pack labelling in their endeavor to tackle rising obesity. Most of the snacks like bhujiya or banana chips will contain salt and fat, and sweets like rasgulla and mysore pak will contain sugar. Even summer beverages like jaljeera, nimbu pani, lassi, and chaach will have sugar/salt and food accompaniments like pickle or chutney will have salt and fat contents.
Another category of other indigenous traditional foods such as parathas and thepla may contain salt and fat. Therefore, if one were to peek into what is in store in future, you may most likely see your favourite Indian indigenous foods and specialties emerging from different states being marked in red and labeled as ‘not good food’ and getting levied higher tax rate making them costly and beyond reach of common man. As businesses contend with the perpetual growth of data, they need to rethink how data is captured, preserved, accessed and transformed. NVMe is having a great impact on businesses and what they can do with data, particularly Fast Data for real-time analytics and emerging technologies. NVMe is more than faster flash storage – it’s also an end-to-end standard that enables vastly more efficient transport of data between storage systems and servers. NVMe is commonly used for solid-state storage, main memory, cache memory or backup memory. It provides an alternative to the Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) standard and the Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) standard for connecting and transmitting data between a host system and a target storage device. NVMe was designed for use with faster media. Architecturally, the logic for NVMe is physically stored within and executed by the NVMe controller chip that is physically co-located with the storage media, usually an SSD. NVMe technology has found its way into consumer-grade products as well in the form of external hard drives and plug-and-play memory for CPUs. Through wider adoption and economies of scale, NVMe is expected to eventually become the most cost-effective option for memory. The protocol provides a high-bandwidth and low-latency framework to the storage protocol, but with flash-specific improvements.
NVMe supports a large number of deep queues and commands per queue. It enables parallelism in multiple cores of the system while supporting the Non-Uniform Memory Architecture (NUMA). Lockless command submission and completion provides much better latency and bypasses all SCSI layers. Hyperscale data centers are the early adopters of non-volatile memory express flash, as vendors lay out plans to further flash devices and NVMe fabrics in coming years. From on-premise data center to cloud to the new entrant edge; data centers are growing more sophisticated with each passing day to keep up with the dynamic business world.
The four types of data centres we see are On-premise Data Centers, Colocation Data Centers, Hyperscale Data Centers and Edge Data Centers. On-premise data centers reduce latency as they are stored within the company location, thereby ensuring higher level of data security. However, they are not cost-efficient solutions as they involve higher cost for maintenance, security, and regular repairs. Whereas, Colocation Data Centers bring cost-effective methods of housing data centers as the companies need not worry about its maintenance, security, and repair. However, Hyperscale data centers are large and can house thousands or millions of data center servers. These data centers are meant to be scaled, which can be done by increasing the power of the system or adding more data center racks and equipment. Companies with large amounts of data can benefit from the scalability of hyperscale data centers. As technology is getting advanced, many are preferring to go for Edge data centers which are smaller facilities located close to the edge of the end-user network.
