The Indian Pharma sector is ranked third largest by volume in the global market and is currently valued at $41.7 billion and it is forecast to reach $65 billion by 2024 and $120 billion by 2030. Digital technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, 3D Printing, and Additive Manufacturing are helping Indian Pharmaceutical companies to step up R&D process, conducting tests in less time, improving efficiencies and compliances in manufacturing, and increasing profitability.
Technology has helped in delivery of evidence-based healthcare, allowed self-monitoring of chronic conditions, increased compliance to medication and enhanced concordance between patient and pharmacists.
Today pharma is recognised as a well-entrenched sector for our country’s economy and is anticipated to grow threefold in the decade. While it is expected to be a $65 billion industry by 2024. Digital transformation across the entire value chain was vital for enhanced patient care, greater transparency, cost-effectiveness, improved production and drug development.
The growing affordability of exponential technologies such as those that enable AI is bringing cost-prohibitive tools to the mass market, reducing production costs and enabling the creation of more individualized products and services.
Given the disruptive nature of these technologies, it will prove increasingly important for pharmaceutical manufacturing chains to be operationally agile. Informatic solutions that offer the versatility and scalability to extend capabilities as business needs change will give pharmaceutical manufacturers the best competitive advantage.

IT spending in India is expected to grow
IT spending in India is forecasted to total $101.8 billion in 2022, an increase of 7% from 2021, according to the latest forecast by Gartner. The digital transformation trajectory that began as a pandemic response is here to stay for the next few years. India has experienced one of the fastest recoveries despite being one of the worst hit regions in the second wave of the pandemic in early 2021. In 2022, CIOs in India will build on renewed interest in technology from the business to gain funding for new IT projects. Indian CIOs are likely to increase their spending towards projects that drive innovation and modernizing legacy systems. Hiring a workforce that can deliver on these needs will also be a key priority. Next year, Indian CIOs are prioritizing a move away from rigid and monolithic ways of doing business to a more composable business and IT architecture where they will be able to better respond to disruptions.
In 2022, all segments of IT spending in India are expected to grow, with software emerging as the highest growing segment. Spending on software is forecast to total $10.5 billion in 2022, up 14.4% from 2021. While experiencing a slower growth rate than 2021, spending on software in 2022 is forecast to be nearly double of what it was pre-pandemic. As hybrid work adoption increases in the country, there will be an uptick in spending on devices in 2022, reaching $44 billion, an increase of 7.5% from 2021. “The growth in devices is a combination of two components – hybrid work and pent-up demand from 2020 for device upgrades. Spending on devices will make up 43% of total IT spending next year.” Spending on communication services is expected to rise 2.3% to $24.5 billion in 2022 from $24 billion in 2021, while that on data centre systems is forecast to grow 3.4% to $2.8 billion in 2022 from $2.7 billion in 2021, according to Gartner reports.

Hybrid Learning is the future
Post pandemic, many are looking forward to the long-awaited return of the physical classrooms. However, the pandemic has disrupted the education landscape in India forever thereby accelerating the adoption of e-learning or blended learning. It is absolutely true that technology is essential & innovation is a cornerstone. The education system has seen a dynamic shift in terms of how it operates. Due to unfortunate circumstances of the pandemic, more than 35 crore students and 1.08 crore teachers across 15 lakh schools, 1,028 universities, 41,901 colleges and 10,726 standalone institutes in our country were unable to attend classes during the lockdown. Universities are now evaluating how they can leverage technology to create classrooms of the future and educational institutions are under tremendous pressure to establish excellent standards for hybrid learning – with educators teaching students in both the classroom and at home. To address this challenge, traditional teaching methods had to be revamped and educators started using technology in innovative ways to make learning a lot more interactive. The future is lying on hybrid learning, which is going to help to change the way we think of education and is removing many of the barriers that have traditionally existed.
One of the most important factors while implementing the hybrid learning approach is to ensure that the quality of the learning experience is the same as in class training. Artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, machine learning, and blockchain have enhanced systems to make online learning effective. The capability of these advanced technologies to automate basic classroom activities such as queries, feedback, and evaluation is helping improve the overall experience of users, further fuelling the edtech boom. The household debt as a percentage of gross domestic product may have declined to 34% in the first quarter of 2021-22 with the commensurate rise in GDP in the first quarter, though it has increased in absolute terms, the household debt has increased to Rs 75 lakh crore in the first quarter of FY22 from Rs 73.59 lakh crore in FY21, a report of State Bank of India's Research says. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a spike in household debt to the GDP rate. As per the report, it rose sharply to 37.3 percent in 2020-21 from 32.5 percent in 2019-20.
The good thing is that in rural India, the share of outstanding cash debt from non-institutional credit agencies has declined significantly to 34% in 2018 from 44%in 2012. Notably, almost all states have registered a steep decline in non-institutional credit in rural areas, indicating the increase in formalisation of the economy. The share of non-institutional credit has declined significantly in the case of Bihar, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Haryana and Gujarat. In Haryana and Rajasthan, which witnessed loan waiver schemes, the share of non-institutional credit declined contrary to popular perception, it said. This could be explained by a significant increase in penetration of KCC (Kisan Credit Cards) in these two states. The number of KCC cards has jumped by 5 times over the 7 year period ended 2020. The report believes that the recent reforms in agriculture could further help in the formalisation of the economy, despite the political cacophony.
