    स्लामिक कैलेंडर के अनुसार मुहर्रम साल का पहला महीना होता है. मुहर्रम का त्योहार आशूरा मुहर्रम के महीने की शुरुआत के 10वें दिन मनाया जाता है. मुहर्रम का शाब्दिक अर्थ है 'पवित्र'. यह चार पवित्र महीनों (मुहर्रम, शव्वाल, जिलकाड और जिलज्ज) में से एक है. जैसा कि पवित्र कुरान (9, 66-37) में दर्शाया गया है. मुहर्रम पहली तारीख से शुरू होकर पूरे दस दिनों तक चलता है. यह त्यौहार शिया-सुन्नी दोनों ही वर्ग के मुसलमानों के लिए काफी महत्वपूर्ण माना जाता है. इस्लामिक कैलेंडर के अनुसार मुहर्रम नए इस्लामिक साल का पहला महीना माना होता है. साल 2021 में अंग्रेजी कैलेंडर के मुताबिक मुहर्रम का महीना 9 अगस्त से शुरू हो रहा है. यह इस्लामी साल 1443 होगा. इस माह के शुरू होने के 10वें दिन आशुरा पड़ता है. इस दिन मुहर्रम का त्योहार मनाया जाता है.
    इस्लामिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार मुहर्रम का त्योहार इस्लाम के संस्थापक पैगंबर हजरत मुहम्मद के पोते हजरत इमाम हुसैन की शहादत के गम में मनाया जाता है. कहा जाता है कि मुहर्रम की 10वीं तारीख को 680 ई. में कर्बला के मैदान में भयंकर नरसंहार हुआ था, इसी नरसंहार में इमाम हुसैन के साथ-साथ उनके 72 साथी शहीद हो गए थे. इसी शहादत की याद में इस दिन देश भर में ताजिया निकाली जाती है. ये ताजिया हजरत इमाम हुसैन और पैगंबर मुहम्मद के पोते हजरत इमाम हसन की कब्रों की प्रतिकृति होते हैं. इसके बाद से ही मुहर्रम का त्योहार मनाने की परंपरा चली आ रही है.
    मुहर्रम के महीने के दसवें दिन को अशूरा कहा जाता है. इसे इस्लामिक इतिहास के सबसे निंदनीय दिनों में से एक माना जाता है. भारत में मुहर्रम अशूरा के दिन मनाया जाता है. इस दिन शिया मुसलमान काले कपड़े पहनकर जुलूस निकालते हैं और इमाम हुसैन ने इंसानियत के जो पैगाम दिए हैं, उन्हें लोगों तक पहुंचाते हैं.
    इस्लामिक साल को हिजरी संवत के नाम से जाना जाता है. इसकी शुरुआत हज़रत मोहम्मद साहब के मक्का से मदीना प्रवास करने यानी हिज़रत से मानी जाती है. इस्लामिक मान्यतानुसार 16 जुलाई सन 622 ईस्वी से हिजरी संवत का प्रारम्भ हुआ. यह चन्द्रमा पर आधारित गणना से वर्ष में 354 दिन और 12 माह का होता है. मोहर्
