India clears Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2023
The newly introduced Digital Personal Data Protection Bill has retained the contents of the original version of the legislation proposed last November, including those that were red-flagged by privacy experts. The passage of the Bill took a little over an hour. The Lok Sabha had cleared the Bill on Monday. The Bill will become law once it receives the President’s assent.
The Bill aims to ensure that data collection, sharing, and storage practices adhere to strict standards, keeping individuals' privacy intact. Whereas, the privacy experts have red-flagged, such as exemptions for the Centre. In its new avatar, the proposed law has also accorded virtual censorship powers to the Centre.

Malicious IoT botnet activity
A report finds that recently there has been a sharp increase in the malicious IoT botnet activity due to growing number of #IoTdevices in use. There are billions of IoT devices in use around the world, and this number is only going to increase in the future.
An expert says, there is lax in security of many IoT devices. Many IoT devices are not properly secured, making them easy targets for attackers. IoT botnet attacks can be very profitable for attackers, as they can be used to disrupt businesses, steal data, and launch other malicious activities.
According to the Nokia Threat Intelligence Report 2023, the number of IoT devices (bots) engaged in botnet-driven DDoS attacks rose from around 200,000 a year ago to approximately 1 million devices, generating more than 40% of all DDoS traffic today. This sharp increase in botnet activity has been driven by a number of factors.
The Report found that IoT botnet DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) traffic, originating from a large number of insecure IoT devices with the aim of disrupting telecom network services for millions of users, increased fivefold over the past year, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and stemming from the growing increase in profit-driven hacking collectives operated by #cybercriminals.

One of the world's biggest online marketplaces selling stolen credentials has been shut down following an operation involving a host of law enforcement agencies. Genesis Market was one of the most significant platforms on the criminal market. Its removal will be a huge blow to criminals across the globe.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and European law enforcement agencies have taken down the domains and infrastructure of Genesis Market, one of the world’s most prolific marketplaces for stolen credentials from malware infected computers belonging to consumers and businesses.
Genesis Market was user-friendly, providing users with the ability to search for stolen access credentials based on location and/or account type (e.g., banking, social media, email, etc.). Genesis Market Offered Access to Data Stolen From Over 1.5M Compromised Computers Worldwide and Was a Key Enabler of Ransomware.
Genesis Market traded in digital identities, selling ‘bots’ that contained information harvested from victim devices, which had been infected using malicious attacks. The bots would give criminals access to all the data pertaining to an individual identity, such as cookies, saved logins and autofill form data.
