Hackers Caught Hiding in Cisco Router Firmware
A Chinese state-sponsored advanced persistent threat (APT) called BlackTech was caught modifying router firmware on Cisco routers to maintain stealthy persistence and pivot from international subsidiaries to corporate headquarters.
The NSA and FBI warn that a Chinese state-sponsored APT called BlackTech is hacking into network edge devices and using firmware implants to silently hop around the corporate networks of the U.S. and Japanese companies.
The attackers used a variety of methods to exploit the Cisco routers, including:
Exploiting vulnerabilities in the Cisco IOS firmware.
Using social engineering techniques to trick victims into installing malicious firmware.
Replacing legitimate firmware with malicious firmware.
Once the attackers had compromised a router, they would use it to launch further attacks on the network, such as stealing data or installing malware on other devices.

AIT Phishing: Defending Against Advanced Threats
#There has been a significant rise in cyber threats from SMS traffic or artificial inflated traffic (AIT), compelling the enterprises to pay up for unauthorized messages, or traffic generated by fraudsters via applications or bots, to infiltrate telecom networks via CPaaS (communication-platform-as-a-service) providers.
CPaaS, or Communications Platforms as a Service, has emerged as a valuable solution for companies searching for more customizable technology stacks. AIT (artificial inflated traffic) is accounted for over 20% of global traffic in 2022, and estimates suggest a 40% rise in AIT-related incidents in 2023.

OTTs - an alternative to movie halls!!
OTT stands for “over-the-top,” as in going above and beyond streaming cable networks or YouTube. OTT platforms are cost-effective, these #OTTplatforms have emerged as an important alternative for visiting a movie hall during the pandemic by becoming their primary source of revenue and audience — are not buying them anymore without a theatrical release first.
According to an Eros Now-KPMG report, an OTT viewer in India spends approximately 70 minutes per day on video streaming platforms, with a consumption frequency of 12.5 times a week! In India we have various OTT services available as an option and they are Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, ALTBalaji, Zee 5, Aha, Voot, SonyLIV, Viu, Hoichoi, etc are some of the prominent OTT providers.
As per reports, OTT players are not buying most of the films which are being offered to them for direct release, instead asking producers to release them in theaters first.
Media & entertainment is one of the fastest-growing industries in India. There were over 45 million OTT subscribers in India in 2022 and this figure is expected to reach 50 million by the end of 2023 and the market is set to become a Rs 12,000-crore industry by 2023.
An expert says, we encourage our producers to take their film to the theatres first, and then to OTTs. It shows that the producers have confidence in the content. Also, it helps the overall marketing of a film.
There are challenges faced by OTT platforms, Security and privacy are the two most pressing issues for OTT platforms. User information saved on their platforms during sign-in or search history should not be exploited for illegal purposes.

Ransomware industry moving steadily
Ransomware is like the current pandemic, it gives a feeling of being both distant and not dangerous, when in the midst of it you understand what it really is. You don’t know what has hit you and where to go. Ransomware has been steadily gaining ground for the last few years, but for those unaffected, it seemed to be an academic exercise. At the same time , the whole World has ended up paying ransom in the recent past. If we go by some of the ransom payments this year; $2.3 million by Travelex, Colonial Pipelines $5 million, JBS $11 million, Garmin was demanded $10 million but payment not known, Cognizant April 2021 payment not known etc. In the last two cases the data was decrypted, so you can come to your own fair judgement. This gives a clear indication of the fact that the ransomware industry is moving steadily in the direction of targeted ransomware attacks. They feel that is where the money is and they have been proven right.
The technical, social engineering and business acumen professionalism which these hackers have gained over the years have emboldened them to go in for bigger catches. They have realised that they have the skills by which they can turn the world upside down and they are doing it. Every single case proves their hypothesis. The world is just not ready to handle a crime of this nature. WannaCry was a test case of crowdsourcing ransom. Its spread was phenomenal, nobody knew what was the quantum of actual proceeds? The surprising part is, even after the ransom was paid, the copy of the data remained with them, which is then offered for further extortion; financial blackmail, sell it to business competitors; simply, make maximum money out of that data, whichever way. To add to the agony nearly 36% of the companies / victims face a second attack by the same hackers.

Cognizant to shed 7,000 jobs to cut costs, exit content business
Cognizant will cut as many as 7000 jobs in the next few quarters and exit its content moderation business, impacting another 6000 employees, as it begins a strategic restructuring to cut jobs. In a post-earnings conference call with analysts, the Teaneck, New Jersey-headquartered company said it would remove 10,000-12,000 mid-to-senior employees from their current roles, and reskill and redeploy about 5000 of those impacted.
