Big tech giants should reimburse victims of online fraud
Fraudsters create a third-party phishing website which looks like an existing genuine website, such as - a bank’s website or an e-commerce website or a search engine, etc. Links to these websites are circulated by fraudsters through Short Message Service (SMS) / social media / email / Instant Messenger, etc.
Many customers click on the link without checking the detailed Uniform Resource Locator (URL) and enter secure credentials such as Personal Identification Number (PIN), One Time Password (OTP), Password, etc., which are captured and used by the fraudsters.
Recently, Lloyds, Santander, Barclays, TSB demand Google, Facebook reimburse online fraud victims. While banks have signed up for a voluntary code to reimburse fraud victims who do enough to protect themselves, there is not sufficient regulation governing social media and other websites where victims are often first lured in.
Big tech companies whose online platforms carry advertisements for scams should be made to reimburse victims, British lawmakers said, as part of wider efforts to combat a growing epidemic of online fraud in Britain.
Citing the ‘polluter pays’ principle, a widely recognised concept where those that generate pollution should cover the cost of controlling the risk and the human impact, TSB, Barclays, Santander, and Lloyds have called out Facebook, Instagram, Google, and telecom organisations for not paying anything towards losses.
Experts pointed out that “partial or total” compensation from technology firms was long overdue. Authorised fraud doesn’t start and end with banks, other sectors play a role in facilitating it. The steps some tech giants have taken to help prevent scams are welcome, but they also need to help with the cost.
Social media brands like Facebook and Instagram, alongside Google, and telecom companies, do not currently pay any compensation to victims of fraud. The report says that research from Barclays found that overബൈ VARINDIA | 124 വ്യൂസ് (വീക്ഷണത്തിന്റെ എണ്ണം)

The internet that connects the global network of billions of interconnected computers and other such devices is single-handedly responsible for impacting the everyday world around us. We already live in a virtual world.The internet has blurred the line between reality and virtual space. The current iteration of the internet is still seeing many advancements with each passing day. Experts postulate that the next version of the internet will be more sophisticated and intelligent than the current one. Tim Berners Lee labeled web 3.0 as the semantic web. Now Web3 is to take the world wide web as we know it and add blockchains – the technology behind cryptocurrencies like bitcoin – to everything. The proponents of Web3 say it is now dominated by big corporations and proprietary algorithms. The primary idea behind Web3—the term was coined in 2014, by Gavin Wood, it will be based on the same blockchain technology that powers things like cryptocurrencies and NFTs. Blockchains are essentially incorruptible digital ledgers that can be used to track the movement of digital assets. Just as cryptocurrency in theory bypasses central authorities such as banks, Web3 would also bypass the central authorities we know as Big Tech. It is all about A paradigm for the Internet and this is where Web3 comes in. The last two decades have proven that building a scalable system that decentralizes content is a challenge. While the technology to build such systems exists, no content platform achieves decentralization at scale.
Web 1.0, the modern-day internet was a military computer network called the ARPANET. Its development was funded by ARPA, a branch of the U.S. Defense Department in the latter half of the 1960s. Digital assets are expected to have tremendous potential
‘Web 3.0′ envisions a decentralised future where users and machines are able to interact with data via smart, digital contracts over peer-to-peer networks, without the need for Big Tech. Digital assets like Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, etc are the fuel of the future financial ecosystem and Web 3.0. According to the report by crypto and digital asset exchange CrossTower in partnership with US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, the digital asset economy’s value to India’s GDP will grow at 43.1% CAGR— from $5.1 billion in 2021 to $261.8 billion over an 11-year period, resulting in a $1.1 trillion contribution to India’s GDP. Digital asset market capitalisation was nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, and stands at about $3 trillion today. As per the reports, most of $1.1 trillion in the total economic growth in the next 11 years can come from ancillary digital asset-related businesses that are yet to be invented. India is poised for growth to become a $5 trillion economy by 2024-25. Digital assets are expected to have tremendous potential in the next 11 years across countries, due to their rapid adoption. They are expected to help India achieve the $5 trillion economy goal.
According to the findings, the adoption rate of digital assets (as reflected by accounts opened on centralised cryptocurrency exchanges) is growing nearly twice as fast as that of the Internet. It took the Internet approximately 7.5 years to go from around 100 million users to one billion users. The same growth at cryptocurrency exchanges will take about four years. From digital art to ticket sales, music, collectables, luxury items and gaming, non-fungible tokens could transform the way people interact day-to-day. While still nascent, NFTs are projected to emerge into a market of $1 trillion or more,” the report mentioned.
