Ransom has taken quantum leap
#Ransomware is executed in a variety of ways, for different reasons and motives. The technology also carries risks however. It may lead to a new wave of #cybercrime, as quantum computers can crack even the most elaborate forms of encryption in use today. This takes a quantum leap in the cyber world.
Ransomware has quickly become the most prominent and visible type of malware. Ransomware attacks are on the rise but few people understand the hidden costs beyond that of the initial extortion payment. This can include response and restoration expenses, legal fees and monitoring costs.
The sophistication of these ransomware groups even extends to the targeting of victims and how a ransom figure is decided as well as the negotiation techniques they use to exact maximum financial gain.
As per the report from CPR has monitored a 24% increase in ransomware attacks Year-over-Year to organizations globally. The weekly average of impacted organizations stands at one in 53 versus one in 66 in the same period of 2021.
Over the years, cybercriminals have perfected their processes in defining extortion demands and developed sophisticated techniques for negotiation with victims, with the aim of exacting the maximum level of ransom payment that the victim organization can afford.
Sophos research finds an increase of 94% between 2021 and 2022. More than two-thirds healthcare organisations in the US said they had experienced a ransomware attack in 2021, up from 34% in 2020. In the US, ransomware attacks on healthcare have become particularly common. 41% of such attacks globally have been carried out against US based firms in 2021.
The increase has just not been only in numbers but there is also growing sophistication of these attacks. The current situation is terrible. Ransomware has led to health care disruptions.

Several countries' ramped up drive against the black money menace has forced wealthy elites, including from India, to adopt a new method to ring fence their wealth, revealed the 'Pandora Papers', the latest leak of offshore files. The records include an unprecedented amount of information on so-called beneficial owners of entities registered in the British Virgin Islands, Seychelles, Hong Kong, Baleez, Panama, South Dakota and other secrecy jurisdictions. They also contain information about the shareholders, directors and officers. The interesting thing is Pandora Papers investigation also reveals how banks and law firms work closely with offshore service providers to design complex corporate structures. The influencers had paid millions to hide Trillions and the files show that providers don’t always know their customers, despite their legal obligation to take care not to do business with people who engage in questionable dealings.
About 30,000 private foreign trusts had been set up across the globe in not just tax friendly jurisdictions, where the laws are comparatively lenient, but also in those jurisdictions such as US, Singapore, which have very rigorous tax laws. Many jurisdictions continue to evade law enforcement agencies that chase the secret money trails of tax dodgers and criminals. Due to all the obvious regulatory and enforcement gaps, and to the seeming lack of political will to address those gaps actively and practically, there are some encouraging signs suggesting governments around the world are being forced to act. The investigation also reports on how U.S. trust providers have taken advantage of some states’ laws that promote secrecy and help wealthy overseas clients hide wealth to avoid taxes in their home countries. #Ransomware is now one of the most potentially damaging — and prevalent — types of malware. With this lucrative crime, hackers break into a firm’s computer system, encrypting the data, which they will only release for a fee. A Sophos report revealed that the majority (83%) of IT teams in India said the number of phishing emails targeting their employees increased during 2020. Even government agencies are not spared. In February 2021, a number of senior Indian government officials, including those from the ministries of defence and external affairs, were targeted in a phishing campaign. According to the government officials, the attackers were using compromised government domain email accounts to launch their hacking attempts. Back in July 2020, a major Indian snacks manufacturer, Haldiram, faced a ransomware attack on its servers by hackers who allegedly encrypted all its files, data, applications and systems and demanded a ransom of 7 hundred thousand USD for giving access to the stolen data. Cybercriminals have now resorted to stealing information during an attack and threaten to publish this information on leak sites on the dark web or sell it, increasing the pressure for victims to pay the ransom.
In February 2021, India’s national airline, Air India, reported a cyberattack on their SITA passenger service systems containing personal identity information, passport data, ticket information, frequent flyer data and credit card information of about 4.5 million customers around the world. Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that ransomware damage costs will exceed $265 billion by 2031, with attacks on businesses, consumers, or devices occurring every two seconds. Whether the prediction is right or wrong, the message stays the same. Businesses need to plan, implement effective data protection and ransomware prevention solutions, and back up their data. The ‘human factor’ is one of the most important components of a successful IT security system. It is therefore key to sensitise each employee to the importance of IT security – and the most effective way to achieve that is by turning it into a game, letting the learner experience scenarios they can recognise in an immersive environment. Now it is evident that any software can be hacked if you do not deploy security measures and follow best practices. Cybersecurity is now a frequent issue for companies. Websites get hacked every day and some of those hacks are fatal to the business.
Ransomware attacks have become popular in the last few years and pose one of India’s most prominent Cyber Security challenges in 2020. According to the Cyber Security firm Sophos, about 82% of Indian organizations were hit by ransomware in the last six months. Ransomware attacks involve hacking into a user’s data and preventing them from accessing it until a ransom amount is paid. Ransomware attacks are critical for individual users but more so for businesses who can’t access the data for running their daily operations. However, with most ransomware attacks, the attackers don’t release the data even after the payment is made and instead try to extort more money. Going forward, there will be about 11.6 billion IoT devices by 2021. IoT devices include desktops, laptops, mobile phones, smart security devices, etc. As the adoption of IoT devices is increasing at an unprecedented rate, so are the challenges of Cyber Security.

The pandemic has heightened the importance of the supply chain and the need to protect it from cybercrime. Supply chain attacks have long been a concern in cyber security circles as it can be difficult to enforce or prescribe cyber security measures for suppliers and partners. Secondly, there is high growth of ransomware in the education sector, which looks at the extent and impact of ransomware attacks on educational institutions worldwide during 2020 and continuing in 2021. Education, together with retail, faced the highest level of ransomware attacks during 2020, with 44% of organizations hit (compared to 37% across all industry sectors). For educational institutions, the financial impact of a ransomware attack in 2020 was crippling. The total bill for rectifying a ransomware attack in the education sector, considering downtime, people time, device cost, network cost, lost opportunity, ransom paid, and more, was, on average, $2.73 million – the highest across all sectors surveyed, and 48% above the global average.
The Sophos report states, over half (58%) of the education organizations hit by ransomware said the attackers had succeeded in encrypting their data and over a third (35%) of those with encrypted data gave in to the attackers’ demands and paid the ransom. Only the energy, oil/gas and utilities (43%), and local government (42%) sectors were more likely to pay and the average ransom payment was $1,12,435 (lower than the global average of $1,70,404) . However, those who paid recovered on average only around two-thirds (68%) of their data, leaving almost a third inaccessible; and just 11% got all their encrypted data back. Of those institutions that were not hit with ransomware last year (55% of respondents), the majority (61%) expect to be targeted in the future. A recent report from Check Point Research says that a malware strain has evolved to steal the information of MacOS users. For as low as $49 on the Darknet, hackers can buy licenses for the new malware, enabling capabilities to harvest log-in credentials, collect screenshots, log keystrokes, and execute malicious files. It has Named “XLoader”, the new strain is a derivative of the famous “Formbook” malware family, which mainly targeted Windows users, but disappeared from being on sale in 2018. Formbook rebranded to XLoader in 2020. Over the past six months, Check Point Research studied XLoader’s activities, learning that XLoader is prolific, targeting not just Windows, but surprisingly, Mac users as well. Hackers can buy XLoader licenses on the Darknet for as low as $49.
Checkpoint Research tracked Xloader activity between December 1, 2020 and June 1, 2021. It saw XLoader requests from as many as 69 countries. Over half (53%) of the victims reside in the United States. XLoader is usually spread by spoofed emails that lure their victims into downloading and opening a malicious file, usually Microsoft Office documents. Since this malware is stealth in nature, it is likely difficult for a “non-technical” eye to recognize whether they have been infected. They usually fall into the category of ‘spyware’, not causing too much damage. Secondly, there is a common incorrect belief with MacOS users that Apple platforms are more secure than other more widely used platforms. While there might be a gap between Windows and MacOS malware, the gap is slowly closing over time. The truth is that MacOS malware is becoming bigger and more dangerous. The recent findings are a perfect example and confirm this growing trend.
