Banks Using Multiple APIs
There are rising concerns on #APIs that are been used in the #bankingindustry, it comes with the risk of security breaches. As APIs allow different systems and platforms to communicate and share data with each other, they can also provide a potential point of entry for cybercriminals to access sensitive information.
The most critical API security risks include: Broken object level, user- and function-level authorization, excessive data exposure, lack of resource, security misconfiguration, and insufficient logging and monitoring. The implications of these and other risks are huge.
Sources said, A leading US investment bank is using APIs to help clients monitor customer sentiment and respond proactively based on the insights gathered. Another US bank has an open portal where developers can access and implement financial solutions for customers, such as direct payments or budgeting and planning.

Cyberattacks on govt agencies
As per CloudSek, India, US, Indonesia, and China accounted for 45% of total #cyberattacks on government agencies worldwide in the second half of 2022 and the number of attacks on government agencies were up 95% year-on-year.
India was the most targeted country in 2022 with attacks on government agencies more than doubled. As India's digital prowess is expected to grow in 2023 driven by 5G technology, startups, semiconductors, electronics and computing, we can expect more disruptive events like it.
In 2022, #hacktivism accounted for 9% of the cyberattacks on the government sector. Hacktivism is a form of cyberattack where the hacker’s motivation is not financial gains but to promote a political agenda or protest against certain policies. Last year, attacks on China also increased due to its aggressive stance towards Taiwan and the Uyghur community.
Attacks on government agencies in China declined to 4.5% of all attacks from 13.10% last year. On the other hand, in India, US, and Indonesia, the share of all attacks grew from 6.3% to 13.7%, 7.4% to 9.6%, and 4.6% to 9.3%, respectively,
In addition to hacktivism, government agencies in India are also increasingly being targeted by phishing campaigns. As per CloudSek, ransomware groups were very active and accounted for 6% of the attacks on governments. LockBIT, which provides ransomware-as-a-service, was the most prominent ransomware operator. Its targets this year include government agencies in the US, Canada, and Italy. In November, a Russian national was arrested in Canada for alleged involvement in LockBIT ransomware campaigns in the US.
Cyberattacks on government agencies are not new. Many of these attacks are state sponsored and are aimed at stealing sensitive information or cripple critical infrastructure of other countries. Satellite Communication has become widespread and ubiquitous throughout the country for diverse applications catering to the sectors which are irreplaceable in serving the nation's interest. Satellite internet is a broadband internet service that uses radio waves to transmit the internet from an ISP hub to your satellite receiver dish which is attached with a modem to provide internet access. Some like SpaceX use lasers instead of radio waves to transmit the data. The radio waves are reflected in the receiver by geosynchronous low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites that are in a fixed position in the sky. The data is transmitted to the satellite. Satellite internet could be the next big step in internet connectivity. Once a fleet of satellites is in orbit, companies would only need to set up the satellite receiver and modem to provide access to the internet from almost any corner of the world. There is no need for cables or other ground-based infrastructure at the customer’s access point. It would stand to revolutionise internet access the same way that the satellite DTH broadcasting services did for television access in India.
India is at the cusp of being a global hub for increased use of satellite communication, which can attract billions of dollars as FDI, generate huge employment, and enhance the GDP growth. About $40 billion private investments have already come in from major satellite broadband companies like Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Amazon’s Kuiper Project and the Bharti Airtel-backed OneWeb and Hughes are competing to become the biggest names in satellite internet in India. For a country like India, where providers would otherwise need to cover vast grounds with ground-based infrastructure, satellite internet provides an easy way to provide internet access to rural areas. In April 2018, #RBI banned banks and other financial institutions from supporting #cryptocurrency transactions, as a result of the news that these digital coins were being used for fraudulent activities. However, in March 2020, the Supreme Court of India slashed down the ban on the grounds of being unconstitutional. According to various reports, Indian citizens are holding around INR 10,000 crore (USD 1.5Bn) in #cryptocurrencies .But as there is no clarity regarding the income tax issue for the gains made via crypto, the need for cryptocurrency regulations is now the new buzz. After giving much thought, the government has now decided to take firm actions. The GOI will soon form a new panel to analyze the possibility of regulating cryptocurrency in India, with the thought of revisiting old views. This new panel will allegedly consider using blockchain technology, new approaches to cryptocurrency as a digital asset instead of currency, and examine ways to operationalize the RBI’s proposal for its 'Digital Rupee'.
‘Official Digital Currency Bill – 2021’ is the proposed crypto regulation that will suspend all private cryptocurrencies and work on laying the foundation for the launch of an “official digital currency” by RBI. This bill was introduced in the Parliament’s Union Budget session, this year. Thinking on the fate of Indian crypto startups: Currently, India has more than 200 blockchain startups. Out of those, many have now been acquired by Binance, a global crypto asset management and trading company, including #Unocoin, #Zebpay, and #WazirX, while leading US-based crypto company #Coinbase has been investing in Indian startups. However, these activities are no longer limited to passive investments.
